Christian Spencer will give the presentation "The Concept of Folkloric Roots in the Chilean Press: History and Debates (1990-2004)" at the ARLAC Congress on Monday, August 10. He will be part of the panel "Press, Categories, and Musical Identities in Latin America."

CMUS's director states: "This presentation investigates the use and development of the concept of folkloric roots in the Chilean press between 1990 and 2004, the year its use was established in Law No. 19928 (2004). My goal is to contribute to historical traceability and to differentiate the concept from that of 'folklore.' To achieve this goal, I analyze its trajectory by triangulating three sources: its appearance in the Chilean press (1990-2004) and in competitive funding programs (1992-2022); its use and meaning according to performers of both older and newer generations; and the perspective of musicological research on the subject."
