Daniela Fugellie publishes academic article in Itamar journal

A new issue of the academic journal Itamar, published by the Universitat de València, has been released. It features the article «Revisiting the New School: music teachers’ narratives in Santiago, Chile», whose lead author is Carolina Figueroa, while her co-authors are Rolando Ángel-Alvarado, a CMUS graduate student, and Daniela Fugellie, principal researcher at CMUS.
The abstract reads as follows: «School music education is influenced by traditional approaches centered on technical repetition and content transmission. The aim of this study is to explore the basic principles of the New School that music teachers have internalized in order to carry out their work in the classroom. This study follows a qualitative design based on the constant comparative method offered by grounded theory. The sample consisted of three music teachers with extensive experience in Santiago, Chile. The results show that music education consistent with the New School requires flexible planning, inclusive environments, and a reflective attitude on the part of teachers. This study offers guidance for moving toward a music education that not only teaches music, but also promotes autonomy and creativity through activities that take into account students’ interests and experiences».
