Daniela Fugellie is one of CMUS's principal researchers who will take part in the VII ARLAC Congress in Rio de Janeiro. In addition to giving a talk, she will present a new book she edited, Situated Serialisms: Musical Creation, Disputes, and Affects in Mexico, Cuba, and Costa Rica.

The publication also features writing by Luisa Vilar-Payá, Ana R. Alonso Minutti, Belén Vega Pichaco, Liliana González Moreno, Daniela Fugellie, and Susan Campos Fonseca, and will be published later this year by Ediciones Universidad Alberto Hurtado.

About the book, Daniela Fugellie notes: "We will present the book's approach, its guiding threads, etc. The term 'serialism' encompasses a range of compositional practices, from free atonality and dodecaphony to integral serialism, which were key to 20th-century musical creation. While there are various studies on serialism in South America, work devoted to composers from Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean has so far been scarce. This book addresses the presence of serialism in Mexico, Cuba, and Costa Rica, manifested not only in the creation of serial works, but also in the extensive aesthetic and political disputes it sparked, and in the affective dimensions surrounding both its adoption and its rejection."
