Daniela Fugellie will give a talk at ARLAC

This Wednesday, August 12, Daniela Fugellie will give the talk "Transnational Avant-Gardes: Exchanges between Latin American and Spanish Composers at the Latin American Center for Advanced Musical Studies (CLAEM)" at the VII ARLAC Congress, together with Daniel Moro Vallina, musicologist and academic at the University of Oviedo (Spain).

Ahead of their presentation, both wrote: "Between 1962 and 1971, the Latin American Center for Advanced Musical Studies, directed by Alberto Ginastera at the Di Tella Institute, symbolized a milestone of musical modernity in Latin America. Although the history of CLAEM has already been studied through the testimonies of its fellows (Vázquez, 2015), its activities (Castiñeira de Dios, 2011), the experimental currents it embraced (Herrera, 2018), or its significance within the Argentine modernization project (Novoa, 2007), the study of CLAEM's international exchanges has mostly focused on 'big names' of Central European musical creation such as Iannis Xenakis or Luigi Nono. By contrast, little attention has been paid to its relations with Spain, despite the fact that two prominent representatives of the Spanish avant-garde —Cristóbal Halffter and Luis de Pablo— were guest lecturers, in addition to contacts with the Institute of Hispanic Culture, the Festival of America and Spain, and the OAS, in which Ginastera and various fellows took part. The aim of this paper is to analyze CLAEM's exchanges with figures and agents of Spanish musical life and the development of diplomatic, institutional, and personal contacts that, in some cases—such as that of the Chilean Gabriel Brncic—would prove lasting. Beyond the view of CLAEM as a mere reproducer of Central European avant-gardes within a dichotomous center-periphery model, this paper explores its role as a transnational, and especially Ibero-American, meeting point, drawing on primary sources held at the Torcuato Di Tella University."

CMUS's principal researcher, Laura Jordán, and the director of the Millennium Nucleus, Christian Spencer, will also attend the Congress, where they will give talks. More information about ARLAC at this link.
