Next Monday, September 7, Laura Jordán will deliver the Keynote Lecture, "Cassette, Past Present," at the Study Group Symposium: Music and Dance in Latin America and the Caribbean, which runs through Friday the 11th.

The CMUS principal investigator writes about it: "How was cassette technology introduced in Chile? What features of the turbulent political context of the long sixties intersected with the adoption of this sound format? How did its widespread popularity during the eighties shape its role as a device for listening and political participation? This lecture offers a historical approach to the cassette cultures that developed in the country during the Popular Unity government and the military dictatorship, exploring parallel threads: between its commercial rollout and its adoption at home by audiences. Drawing on documentary research, the development of oral sources, and the analysis of sound archives, it proposes a local interpretation of the circulation of this technology in a context of precariousness, community projects, and dreams of change."

Also taking part in this gathering will be Andrea Chamorro, with the paper "Dancing, Listening, Repairing: Steps Toward an Ecology of Care," and Ignacio Soto, who will present "Self-Managed Music Scenes: Circulation, Mediation, and Territoriality in Popular Music from Southern Chile."
