Next Tuesday, August 11, Laura Jordán and Jan Koplow will present the paper “The Cassette Never Left: Circulation and Sociability in the Metal and Punk Scenes in Chile” at the VII ARLAC Congress. Their presentation will be part of the panel “Production, Technologies, and Sociability in Urban Music Cultures.”

In their proposal, both researchers write: "Based on digital and in-person fieldwork, as well as interviews with producers and agents in these scenes, this paper examines labels from central Chile focused on metal and punk. Considering aesthetic aspects, such as the appreciation of lo-fi, noise, and distortion, as well as cultural aspects related to the underground and self-managed practices, the analysis seeks to elucidate which material, social, and symbolic aspects of the cassette tape are key to its continued relevance in a context increasingly marked by the platformization of music, the digitization of data, and automated recommendation systems."

On the same day, the CMUS researcher will give an opening talk at the Federal Fluminense University entitled "Cassette Cultures; Cultures of Exile."

CMUS principal researcher Daniela Fugellie and Millennium Nucleus director Christian Spencer will also attend the Congress, where they will present papers. More information about ARLAC can be found at this link.
