From November 27 to 29, the IV ICTMD-Chile Symposium, Music, Sounds and Dance: New Perspectives in Chilean Ethnomusicology took place in Iquique, organized by ICTMD-Chile in collaboration with the University of Tarapacá, the Chilean Musicology Society (SChM), and the Millennium Nucleus in Musical and Sound Cultures (CMUS). The event brought together principal and associate researchers from the Nucleus, including Christian Spencer (U. Mayor), Javiel Silva and Ignacio Soto (ULagos), Andrea Chamorro (UTA), Leonardo Díaz (UAH), and Luis Achondo (PUC).

One notable highlight was the participation of three CMUS thesis students. First, Javiera Benavente (UCh) presented "Caporales santiaguinos: negotiating Andean identities between tradition and change." María Rosario Bravo (PUC) also spoke about "Citizen choirs: the normalization of choral participation in Chile." Finally, Nelson Rodríguez presented "Hip-hop diaspora in Concepción."

In addition to the various thematic panels, on Wednesday, November 29, Symposium attendees took part in activities in the town of Matilla, including witnessing the opening procession of the Fiesta de San Andrés. For further details, see the program.
