On September 1st, the seminar Sound Practices, New Technologies and the Environment will take place, organized by CMUS in collaboration with the Centro de Estudios Mediales UAH, the Fundación Mar Adentro, and the Goethe Institut.

The invited guests are Paula Schopf (University of Berlin), Nicolás Alvarado (Paisaje del Pacífico), Felipe Otondo (Universidad Austral), and Carla Pinochet, deputy director of Núcleo Milenio.

Nicolás Alvarado (b. Santiago, Chile) is a musician, composer, and producer. His practice unfolds through experimental music, immersive sound, and soundscape, exploring the relationships between nature, sound, composition, and active listening. His work brings together compositions and research centered on expanded listening and the sonification of environments and landscapes, materialized in record production, sound interventions, and installations that reconfigure listening itself. His most recent works are Bitácora de Niebla (2026) and Los Árboles Nos dejan oír el Bosque. He is founder and director of the record label Paisaje del Pacífico, with 25 releases to date, and co-founder of the electronic music label ISLA.

Paula Schopf is a multifaceted artist. In 2017, she completed her master's degree in Sound Studies at the Berlin University of the Arts, and has since combined various activities as an electronic music producer, sound artist, and researcher. In her multichannel installations and live multimedia performances, she works with synthetic sounds but relies primarily on field recordings as her starting material. She currently teaches workshops, regularly participates as a speaker at seminars and gatherings related to sound, and is a member of the Berlin School of Sound. Her work has been supported by major cultural and research institutions in Germany and Europe, including Musikfonds and the Berliner Senatsverwaltung für Kultur. Paula Schopf lives in Berlin.

Felipe Otondo is a researcher at the Institute of Acoustics of Universidad Austral de Chile, where he directs the Art and Technology Laboratory (LATe) and serves as principal investigator of the FONDECYT Regular project No. 1250388. He is a composer and acoustic engineer, holding a PhD in musical composition from the University of York (United Kingdom) and a master's degree in engineering from Aalborg University (Denmark). His work focuses on acoustic ecology and soundscape. Through the Soundlapse project, which brings together more than 50,000 periodic recordings of wetlands, bodies of water, and forests in southern Chile, he has developed workshops, sound trails, and pedagogical materials applied in schools in Valdivia to strengthen environmental education through listening.

Carla Pinochet is deputy director of CMUS and holds a PhD in Anthropology (UNAM). On this occasion, she will present the Escuela de la Escucha (School of Listening), an experimental pedagogical initiative of the Núcleo Milenio en Culturas Musicales y Sonoras that seeks to produce and transfer social research methodologies based on music, sound, and listening to educational communities. It is an adaptable methodology for different researchers and educational purposes, exploring the possibilities of the acoustic dimension for social research and community reflection. Its goals are to foster critical listening skills toward music in educational communities, with an emphasis on written-tradition music, and to transfer sound and musical exploration methodologies to high school students, bringing them closer to written-tradition music through sensory experimentation, identity reflection, and collaborative creation. It has been implemented since 2024 and has reached more than 10 regions of the country.
