Panel Discussion "Voice and Listening: Questions, Problems, and Methodologies"

Panel Discussion "Voice and Listening: Questions, Problems, and Methodologies"

On Thursday, November 23, the panel discussion Voz y Escucha: Preguntas, problemas y metodologías ["Voice and Listening: Questions, Problems, and Methodologies"] took place in the auditorium of the Claustro Campus at Universidad Mayor. This event, coordinated by Natalia Bieletto (U. Mayor), featured Laura Jordán (PUCV), Luis Achondo (PUC), and international guest researcher Jorge David García (UNAM). Through various case studies, the researchers reflected on what voice is, what purpose it serves, and what is involved in giving it sound, from both its material and symbolic dimensions.

After an opening introduction, in which Natalia Bieletto reflected on this field of study and its theoretical and methodological implications, Laura Jordán presented part of her project analyzing vocal sound, certain vocal practices and discourses, as well as performative elements from various vocalists and repertoires—including singer-songwriter Chinoy, the performance "Un violador en tu camino" ["A Rapist in Your Path"], and the use of voice in Raúl Ruiz's film La maleta [The Suitcase].

Next, Luis Achondo examined how sound mediates (trans)local and necropolitical relations among football fans in the Southern Cone, focusing his examples on the Club de Fútbol de la Universidad de Chile fan group ["barra brava"]. Finally, Jorge David García presented "Dejarse instruir: Enigmas de investigación en el Archivo de Voces Espectrales" ["Allowing Oneself to Be Instructed: Research Enigmas in the Archive of Spectral Voices"]. The session concluded with a brief discussion and questions from the audience.
